State Assembly/Leaders' Council

On April 23 - 25, Church Women United in Virginia hosted the biannual State Assembly and Leaders' Council. The event was held at Camp Bethany in Fincastle, Virginia. Sixteen members and friends of CWU in VA participated in the assembly.

The function of the State Assembly is to provide an ecumenical experience for Christian women of Virginia in a covenantal community, through worship, study, CWU training, and witness.

The function of the Leaders' Council is to elect officers and members of the Executive Board, Coordinators of Development, Action and Celebrations, members of the Nominating Committee, and the appointment of Area Chairpersons, Newsletter Editor, and Citizen Action Chairperson.

Leaders' Council elected the following women to hold office for the next two years:

President - The Rev. Alice W. Harris

Vice President - Jane Desper

Treasurer - Yvonne Mack

Secretary - Sister Theresa Anderson

Coordinator of Ecumenical Development - Rev. Ernestine Smoot

Coordinator of Ecumenical Action - Maggie Smith

Coordinator of Ecumenical Celebrations - Mary Lind Thorne

Chair of Communications - Susan M. Allen

Chair of Nominations - Dottie Latham

Chair of Finance - Jackie Mickey

Nominating Committee - Jane Carr

Nominating Committee - Janice Hale

Nominating Committee - Della Woodruff

The Council approved the following appointments:

Blue Ridge Area Chair - Thelma Newman

Central/Eastern Area Chair - Bettie Gentry

Tidewater Area Chair - Dottie Latham

Southwestern Area Chair - Jane Carr

Newsletter Editor - Susan Allen

Citizen Action - Betty L. Squire

World Day of Prayer in Virginia

The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year, and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service.

It is a movement initiated and carried out by women in more than 170 countries and regions.

It is a movement symbolized by an annual day of celebration – the first Friday of March – to which all people are welcome.

It is a movement which brings together women of various races, cultures and traditions in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year.

World Day of Prayer 2012, written by Christian women of Malaysia will be held in numerous sites in Virginia. Here are some of them:

St. John's United Church of Christ, 503 Stuart Circle in Richmond, 10:00 a.m., March 2

70th Anniversary of CWU super!

The 70th Anniversary of CWU was attended by over 400 women, celebrating the rich life of Church Women United. Six women from Virginia attended; five women from the Richmond are pictured here:
